McDowell closed many years ago. It was used as an annex by inner city schools for years, then the site for Creative and Performing Media Arts Middle School, a Magnet school. There may have been other uses along the way. Presently, it is the home of iMiddle. (see next paragraph)
Recently, CPMA Middle moved to the Kroc Middle site and the Kroc students who did not want to attend CPMA Middle were moved to the empty McDowell site to form a new school. The Kroc name was dropped and renamed INNOVATION MIDDLE SCHOOL or IMiddle. Kroc no longer exists as a site or a name.
Madison is still with us, however, although a shadow of its former self and now one of the smallest schools in the district. Lots of changes in Clairemont over the years. And more to come in the next few years.

Ray Kroc was a great man and deserves to have a school named after him. Too bad they had to change an existing school's name instead of waiting for a new one to need a name, though. I was a student there 35 yrs. ago, and I always thought it was cool to have a school named after the greatest modern genius in science...

I was at Montgomery Ward in Mission Valley shopping for a lawnmower or something to that effect when the crash happened.
I heard a somewhat of a muffled "boom"; couldn't really tell what it was at first, then someone came on the store intercom and said "Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention please. That sound you just heard was a plane crash. The plane crashed in North Park."
When I went outside, you could look over the hill and see the plume of smoke in the sky. I'll never forget it.

Summer of 1967, in the back of my 1950 Ford Tudor. I don't remember what movie was playing, but that's probably because I was more focused on getting "busy".
You figure the rest of it out.

My first experience of Navy life was in these barracks, April of 1969.
Living with others, cleaning, making your bed, assembling a seabag. We'd get some time to write letters to home. I always thought it was rather pointless to write a letter home, since my parents lived not even ten minutes away in Ocean Beach.
The most absurd thing I remember, however, was having to scrub our uniforms, then stand watch with rifles (M1 Garand) over the finished laundry. Yeah, who was going to take it, the birds?
Looking back, it really wasn't that bad of an experience. Basic training was like a weekend in Vegas compared to what I experienced in Vietnam one year later.

They weren't much of an improvement over the 50's era two-story barracks.
