Also part of Camp Elliot became the U.S.I.U. (United States International University) Elliot campus. As a student in the mid '70s we used to hear tank rounds being fired by the National Guard on the weekends. There was also a small missile test facility that could be seen back in the mountains on the road to Poway.
We used to sneak over to the fenced in camp Elliot to walk near the big radio tower on the hill. There were many strange activities in that area.

The Kroc-Copley Animal Shelter is the largest of the three Department of Animal Services shelters in San Diego County., It was funded, in part, by a $2 million donation from Joan Kroc (McDonalds) and a $2 million donation from Helen Copley (San Diego Union-Tribune). Opened in 2002, the shelter shares its campus with the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA. While the Humane Society does public education and adoption services of relinquished animals, the DAS is the only agency allowed to take in stray animals.
